Water is essential for the proper functioning of every cell, tissue and organ. Even a slight dehydration can have a variety of health effects.
Although some of these problems may seem minor, they can lead to more serious outcomes, such as heat stroke, kidney stone, and seizures.
Here are a few signs that you are on your way to–or are already experiencing–dehydration. If you notice the following symptoms, rehydrate your body.
You feel thirsty
Feeling Thirsty can be a sign of dehydration.
You should not wait to hydrate until you feel thirsty. You are already dehydrated if you feel thirsty.
Urine is yellow (or darker)
You will see that your urine turns clear or pale yellow when you are properly hydrated. Your urine will turn darker yellow as you continue to go without enough fluids.
Yellow urine indicates that you should drink more water.
The darker the color of your urine, the dehydrated you are. If your urine is brown, dark yellow or any other color than light yellow (and it is not a side effect of a medication), then you are dehydrated. You are dehydrated in this case and should seek medical care as soon as you can.
Cracked lips and dry skin
Water is essential for healthy skin. If you’re not hydrated enough, your lips and skin may become flaky and dry.
Skin damage, low humidity or harsh cleaners can cause dryness.
Moisturizers can alleviate symptoms by restoring skin’s barrier. But ultimately, skin is hydrated from the inside. If you have dry skin, you should drink enough water.
You feel tired, weak, or fatigued
Lack of hydration can cause fatigue and weakness. Poor hydration in sports can reduce energy, strength and endurance.
Dehydration can make you tired, even if your not an athlete. You might have headaches or doze more than usual.
Lightheadedness and Dizziness
Dehydration can reduce the amount of blood fluid that circulates in your body. This can cause a drop in blood pressure, which can cause dizziness and lightheadedness.
Dizziness can occur immediately after standing up or changing position due to the change in blood pressure. This is orthostatic hypotension.
This can also lead to fainting, falls and injuries .
If you are feeling lightheaded or dizzy when standing, it is best to sit down and drink water.
